Icod de los Vinos owes its name to the importance of vine cultivation in the 16th century.
However, it was not until the early 20th century that this activity was regulated and included on the coat of arms.
Situated in a valley in the northwestern part of the island of Tenerife, it lies in a natural setting formed by the sea and volcanic mountains. In the surrounding area you can see the Teide-Pico Viejo cattle tracks and the cliffs on the district's coast.
The economy of the area is based around agriculture, the cultivation of bananas and vines, around trade, the chief activity in the urban centre of Icod, and around fishing.
