Monfragüe National Park in the region of Extremadura is exceptional for its valuable Mediterranean forest and because it is a key place for bird watching. We'll give you a few tips so you can enjoy it during your visit.
There are several signposted walking routes in the park. Three of these routes also offer a free guide, and some routes are also suitable for cycling.
You can enjoy a more leisurely visit by touring the park in a 4x4 or by bus. Both types of visits must be booked in advance with one of the companies that work in the area. If you really want to experience the park in depth, we recommend organising a bird-watching day to discover the many bird species that live here.
The wooded pastures known as "dehesas" are very typical of the Monfragüe ecosystem, and you'll often see cows grazing there. You'll probably want to know more about them when you see them. You can do this by stopping by a visitor centre on a farm where you'll be able to see how pigs, cows, donkeys and sheep are fed.
Another interesting option in the park is the guided tour of the cave paintings of El Castillo, which is also free.
Finally, if you prefer to enjoy a day of adventure activities, remember that the many companies that work in the area around the Monfragüe National Park offer a whole range of options such as a paintball site, archery, multi-activity routes and canoeing, all outside the park itself.
Things to remember:
If you'd like to go on a guided walk, you'll need to book in advance at the Villarreal de San Carlos Visitor Centre, or by calling +34 927199134.
If you'd like to visit the El Castillo rock shelter, you'll need to book a place in advance the same day you visit the Villarreal de San Carlos Visitor Centre.
