Come to Spain – and viva football!

In Spain, football itself and all football fans are still caught up in the post-match fiesta. Millions of people are celebrating the Spanish national team’s victories in the World and European Cups. This outstanding double success makes the whole atmosphere surrounding this sport twice as unique as before. Official competitions

The official calendar usually gets underway in August and runs through until June. While FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are always big favourites for the title, there are many other teams who prove their worth at the highest level.

International competitions are played during the week. The most prestigious is the Champions’ League which features the four best teams from the previous year’s “Liga” alongside the best sides from Europe as a whole. On Thursdays comes the European League, featuring at least two Spanish teams each year.

The Copa del Rey (King’s Cup) is the Spanish version of the FA Cup. It is a national competition open to all professional teams. Matches are played during the week, between the international competitions, and are a wonderful opportunity to enjoy thrilling football.

Summer trials

In July and August teams prepare for the coming season and the many friendly tournaments held in Spain feature teams from all around the world. These are a good opportunity to see star players in action. The tournaments include prestigious events such as: the Teresa Herrera Trophy, played in A Coruña (Galicia); the Ramón de Carranza Trophy, in Cadiz (Andalusia); the Naranja Trophy, in Valencia (Region of Valencia); the Colombino Trophy, in Huelva (Andalusia); the Joan Gamper Trophy, in Barcelona (Catalonia); and the Santiago Bernabéu Trophy, in Madrid.
