It is a Cosmopolitan city characterised by its intense cultural and artistic activity as well as a vibrant nightlife. In Chueca neighbourhood you can find a gay village located just north of the downtown core old city, centred on the Plaza de Chueca and Chueca metro Station. Chueca has become more in fashion and trade. There are many new shops, cafes and discotheques, as well as other business oriented to the gay community. In the early 90's the homosexual community established itself here and began rehabilitating houses and opening businesses, turning it into the gay Area of Madrid. Its gay and lesbian pride festivals, held at the end of June, are famous. Nevertheless Chueca has become a quite popular spot for people of all types. Nearby , in the Dunes of Maspalomas, is located the famous Playa de Maspalomas which has a designated gay area. Playa del Inglés is a popular destination with bars, restaurants and businesses centred primarily in the Yumbo Centrum shopping centre.  A Big part of the Yumbo’s uniqueness is due to the "scene".
