Hockney returns to portraiture with this intense exhibition which gathers a set of works with several common characteristics: they are all the same size, they were all painted in three days, and all the subjects are in the same chair, with the same background.
This series of portraits is conceived as a single body of work. The models chosen by Hockney are figures on the Los Angeles art scene, as well as friends, family, and acquaintances. They are all shown sitting on the same chair, with an intense blue background, under the bright light of southern California. Thanks to Hockney’s virtuoso talents, the uniformity of elements across the paintings accentuates the differences between the subjects, letting their personalities emerge on the canvas and making them immediately recognisable. The exhibition also includes a still-life, because one of the models was unable to make their appointment, and the artist, unable to switch off the desire to paint, took what was available in the studio as a subject.
