Description

The General Archive of the Indies in Seville hosts this exhibition to mark the fifth centenary of the discovery of the Pacific Ocean by Núñez de Balboa.

This is the first time these original pieces conserved in the archive go on display to the public. The exhibition includes audiovisual elements, documents, interviews and dramatised exhibits in a montage that symbolises its transformation from an undiscovered ocean to a communications route between peoples. Visitors can see a total of 160 works that highlight the significance of the instant when –in September 1513– Vasco Núñez de Balboa first laid eyes on the new ocean he named the South Sea.
