An image from the exhibition “The challenge of white. Goya and Esteve, portraitists to the Osuna family”
Francisco de Goya’s extraordinary portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Osuna reveal his influence on Agustín Esteve (Valencia, 1753-1820), considered the best portraitist at court after Goya.
The exhibition focuses on the treatment of light, the effect of transparency in the sitters’ clothes, and in general, the technical challenge of depicting the colour white in a painting. One of the works, shown for the first time, is the portrait of Manuela Isidra Téllez-Girón, painted by Agustín Esteve in 1797. The painting is considered the most exceptional child portrait in 18th century Spanish art.
