It is always a pleasure to visit the Plaza Mayor square in Madrid, which is without a doubt one of the most iconic sites in the city. But this year it’s especially important to visit it as it is celebrating its 400th anniversary with a rather interesting programme.

It’s curious to think that this impressive square was a small lake where the monarchs used to hunt ducks at the end of the 16th century and that it has been the site of fires, various reconstructions, Goya parties, etc. On the occasion of its 400th anniversary, a masquerade ball will be held, along with an Easter Week replete with Flamenco-style saeta songs, zarzuela musical comedies on the street, a market dedicated to words, great photographers who will capture the visitors, a broadcasting of the Luisa Fernanda opera, a cinema concert, poetry contests in the square and a fun-filled Baroque festival.More information:
