Timanfaya National Park

A journey to the moon

Because of the spectacular fields of solidified lava that make up the island of Lanzarote, Timanfaya is the land of volcanoes.

Different volcanic eruptions and magmatic activity throughout history turned this land into what we see today. From the natural viewpoint of Montaña Rajada you can observe a vast sea of lava that spreads out to the coast. It is simply impressive: undulations, spectacular shapes formed by lava… Since it was formed, the people living on the island have had to learn how to coexist with this unusual landscape, and they even grow dryland crops such as melons, onions, tomatoes and vineyards in the area of La Geria.

Area: 5.107 Hectares
Location: It is situated on the island of Lanzarote (Canary Islands).

Information for visits: Free access on foot is only allowed on the coast of the National Park, by way of a path that goes round the coast. To visit the rest of the park you need to arrange it with the Visitor Centres. You can find their details on this page.
You can travel by bus through the El Fuego Mountains (you will have to pay at the control point in Taro).
You can also enjoy a camel ride along the southern slope of the Timanfaya Mountain, in the area called Echadero de los Camellos.
The park has a car park, bar-restaurant, shop and public toilets (accessible to disabled people).

Environmental information: The park is divided into two ecosystems: land and sea. In the first, dominated by the lunar landscape, there are many environmental units, such as the volcanic cones, sea of lava, "tabaibal" (ancient areas that are not covered by recent lava, with abundant vegetation), crops, beaches and cliffs. The formations we find in the sea ecosystem are: blowholes and bubbling springs, shallows, black sand beaches and rocky platforms. Many species have adapted to the environment in this unique landscape, so they are the subjects of many studies.

Cultural information: The spectacular and breathtaking landscape has conditioned human life in the surrounding area. One of the most interesting cultural features to be discovered, perfectly explained in the Visitor Centres, is the relationship of the people living in the area with the special natural environment throughout history.
