The Basque Coast, full sail ahead
Have you ever thought about seeing the Basque Coast from the sea? It has never been easier: in Getxo, in the province of Vizcaya, there are organised sailing excursions with every necessary convenience through the programme known as "The Basque Coast, full sail ahead". It is a unique and original way to tour the coastline of the Basque Country, in northern Spain. Enjoy a different view of this region in Green Spain.
Get a close-up look at places where whales lived years ago, such as Punta de Basordas. Admire such emblematic monuments as the San Juan de Gaztelugatxe shrine, an almost legendary place perched over this rugged coast. Take a swim in the clean and limpid waters of the local coves. Try the internationally renowned cuisine in a fishing village or town, such as Bermeo, Lekeitio or Getaria, or watch how the best left wave in Europe and one of the best in the world breaks in Mundaka, a veritable surfing paradise. These are some of the many options available to you with the tourism initiative known as "The Basque Coast, full sail ahead": as many as five sailing routes, guided by the boat's skipper, with durations ranging from half a day to a full week and including full day, bank holiday weekend and weekend excursions. Prices vary depending on the itinerary. There are departures year-round, except in winter, and the boats can accommodate from six to 12 people. Quality and comfort are guaranteed.
You can also hire these boats without a skipper, as long as you can provide advance proof of your sailing experience and training. In any case, bear in mind the fact that it is a good idea to book your trip at least ten days in advance. Before leaving on your excursion, make sure to bring a sleeping bag, a sweater or anorak, a raincoat, rubber footwear in a colour other than black, a towel, wash bag, sun protection and something to eat and drink.
Enjoy this unique adventure, which provides an opportunity to learn basic sailing techniques and to actively participate in some of the crew work. If you like, you can contact the Getxo tourist office for additional information about this programme, and to find out how to make your booking. These excursions include culture, nature, sports and fun. Are you ready? Then here we go.
