Explore the landscapes of the Basque Country in an original, active way. If you like biking and the countryside, then make to discover this part of Green Spain by bike. It's a great way to enjoy the countryside and the coast.
An irresistible idea: come and explore a unique location by mountain bike: the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. It is in northern Spain, in the province of Vizcaya. There are 11 cycling routes in this area: one sets out from the fishing village of Bermeo, another from Gernika-Lumo, two from the village of Errigoiti, and the rest from the Mendata Visitor Centre. At these locations you can hire bikes and they will give you all the necessary information, along with details about the route and places you can visit on the way.
The itineraries are signposted and colour-coded according to difficulty. The routes vary between 8 and 37 kilometres, and the maximum approximate duration is of three and a half hours. The biking route is the perfect excuse to get to know all the different landscapes of the area and to make interesting cultural visits.
Make the most of a departure from Gernika-Lumo to visit the Peace Park, home to sculptures by Eduardo Chillida and Henry Moore, or to visit the Gernika Peace Museum Foundation. The easiest route leaves from here, running alongside the Mundaka River.
If you prefer an intermediate level itinerary, there is a circular route from Errigoiti, stopping at the fishing village of Bermeo. Here you can enjoy the maritime atmosphere and visit Ercilla Tower, which has the Cultural Property designation and is currently home to the Fisherman's Museum.
The more daring can test their level. Head for the Mendata Visitor Centre and pedal out towards the Oiz Wind Farm. The effort will be rewarded at the end of the route where the Bizkaia viewpoint awaits, with stunning views.
