Exhibition: Witches, the metamorphoses of Goya. Denise de la Rue
Instituto del Patrimonio Cultural de España, Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte. Denise de la Rue (2017)
Verónica Echegui and Goya. Based on 'The Witches' Kitchen' by Goya.
The Mexican artist Denise De la Rue presents the second part of her project 'Angels and Witches. The Metamorphoses of Goya' at the Lázaro Galdiano Museum. She approaches the paintings of Francisco de Goya through large-scale photographs of famous Spanish actresses wearing clothes by well-known designers.
On this occasion, the starting point was the set of six paintings of witchcraft subjects or 'asuntos de brujas' commissioned by the Duke and Duchess of Osuna for the palace of 'El Capricho' in La Alameda (Madrid). De la Rue has created large-scale photographs as a dialogue between the works of Goya and six iconic Spanish actresses: Maribel Verdú, Bárbara Lennie, Inma Cuesta, Macarena García, Verónica Echegui and Adriana Ugarte. The resulting pieces have a strong visual impact, reinforced by the artist’s interest in exploring women’s capacity for self-transformation and empowerment. The exhibition includes a video about the painting 'The Witches', with the actress Bárbara Lennie. The work of Denise De la Rue is also an homage to Spanish fashion, as the actresses wear designs by Ana Locking, Cortana, Fernando Claro, Roberto Diz, Alvarno and Jorge Vázquez.
