This Benedictine monastery was founded by Bermudo II “The Gouty” in 990. It enjoyed great political, religious and economic power, and exercised its jurisdiction over other monasteries in Galicia, Asturias and León. It was restored in the 12th century and shows evidence of a succession of architectural styles: transitional Romanesque on the original church of 1138, Gothic in the Mirador de la Reina balcony, and Renaissance in the cloister, refectory and sacristy.
