The World Heritage city of Alcalá de Henares in the region of Madrid celebrates this religious festival with as many as eight processions by associations of penitents throughout its historic quarter.
This is one of the city's most traditional festivities and its origins date back to the 16th century. The event includes eight religious processions, organised visits to the monumental sites along the route of the penitents, and this is also the time that the confectioners of Alcalá de Henares produce the typical Easter sweet known as the Penitent.
