Room I in the Alhambra Museum contains an exhibition of gold coins dating from the period of Sultan Yusuf I (14th century), recently acquired by the Alhambra and Generalife foundation.
Doblas constitute the basis of the Nasrid system of gold currency issue. The coins of Sultan Yusuf I were struck according to the Almohad pattern, which always add the same formal characteristic: the conjunction of a square and a circle. The doblas on display feature Arabic inscriptions which repeat the Nasrid dynastic motto ('There is no victor other than God') and the term 'al-mulk' ('the sovereignty'), signifying the primacy of the sole divinity and the legitimation of political power through religion.
