History and scuba diving
The coastal town of L'Escala has a great variety of landscapes and different inhabited areas. These go from modern seafront developments, to the historic old town and the nearby medieval village of Sant Martí.
Not far away and not to be missed are the Greek Ruins of Empúries, more than 2,000 years old. In 218 BC, the Roman army, under the command of Cornelius Scipio, occupied the Greek town. During the period of the Emperor Augustus the two towns were united under the name Municipium Emporiae. The town was abandoned during the second half of the 3rd century AD.
Fine sand beaches, shallow waters and hidden coves are other assets of L'Escala. You can go scuba diving here, and explore hidden treasures such as the Kim Caves, 12 metres underwater, or the sunken boat "Marmoler", at 42 metres. Anchovies are the most prized local product. In October there is a festival dedicated to this delicacy.
