Come to Numancia, a city of legend
Ruinas de Numancia
A visit to the ruins of the ancient city of Numancia is just one of the many options that await you in the province of Soria, northern Spain. As you wander among age-old stones, and admire stunning views over the Duero River, you can discover the history of this archaeological site, a real symbol of the struggle against the domination of the Roman Empire. This is where a legend, that lives on to this day, was born.
Numancia awaits you, just 8 kilometres from Soria, in the Castile and Leon region, 2 hours by car from Madrid. Discover this ancient city and in just a few minutes you will be transported many centuries back in time. This settlement dates back to the 3rd century BC and is set atop a hill. Defensive walls, streets, houses, thermal baths, wells, cisterns and columns give clues as to what life was like there, and part of it has been painstakingly reconstructed.
The people of Numancia held out against the all-powerful Roman army for 20 years, until they finally surrendered after an 11 month siege. Silence now reigns here, and strolling around this huge open-air museum you can imagine what that battle, that so impressed Rome, was like. The best thing is to follow the marked route around the site. Information panels or a guided visit will help you understand how this well-known historic event unfolded. At the Archaeology Teaching Centre in Garray, the village next to Numancia, there are models, projections and reconstructions dealing with these civilisations. To complete this journey back in time, there is nothing better than a visit to the Numancia Museum in Soria, where many of the artefacts and objects discovered during the excavations are on display.
Furthermore, every summer, on the last Saturday in July, different episodes from the war between Romans and Numancians are re-enacted in the very ruins of the city. This dramatic representation also recreates different aspects of life in ancient Numancia with a great deal of realism. In any case, be sure to ask at the tourist office in Soria, where you will receive more information. While you are there, get to know the city of Soria. It has rich cultural heritage, dating mainly from the Middle Ages. We would also recommend an outing to the Cañón del Río Lobos Nature Reserve, covered in immense pine forests, and barely 60 kilometres from Soria. The province of Soria offers a host of possibilities. Adventure sports, hiking, outings, hunting, fishing, art... You just have to choose the option that best suits your tastes.
