Murcia

One of a traveller's desires is to relax and disconnect from routine. Many choose hydrotherapy to also improve their health and their appearance. On www.spain.info, we want to speak to you about one of the greatest points of reference in Spain with regard to health and spa tourism: Archena hot-spring spa. It is in the south of Spain, in the Mediterranean area of Murcia, and it has an impressive complex designed for you to make you feel better. Its medicinal mineral water is over 15,000 years old and, in Ancient Roman times, this place was already much appreciated. Did you know that, in the Middle Ages, people even came to cure wounds from firearms?

When you reach the spa facilities, you will feel like you are entering the elegant atmosphere of the end of the 19th century. You will have to choose between three hotels and you can enjoy treatments in a thermal tunnel with water that comes from a spring at a temperature of 50 ºC, a thermal circuit with a current that forms an artificial river, lemon-scented baths, a little igloo, massages where mud is combined with thermal water that falls directly onto the client's beds... In July and August, the thermal pools are open until midnight, so you can take a thermal bath under the stars or enjoy a massage with honey or chocolate and almond oils. You will also find a pretty church in the complex, which houses the Virgen de la Salud (Virgin of Health), an old casino with views of the river, Roman ruins, a reproduction of the famous Fuente de Los Leones in La Alhambra... But, perhaps, the main feature of the spa is its spectacular surroundings, as it stands in the natural space on the banks of the river Segura, with greenery and a scent of jasmine that amaze everyone. Whoever you go with, you will find an option that adapts to you. There are massages designed for couples, a kids' spa area, activities for elderly clients, such as aquagym or gym with floats… Underwater christenings have even been organised here.

Relaxation and activities apart from the spa

To get to know the natural environment, the spa organises hikes around the Valle de Ricote valley. In fact, Archena has the longest riverside walk in the whole region (seven kilometres) and the whole valley is dotted with villages with viewpoints, narrow streets with a Moorish past, coats of arms of ancient nobility… There are also getaways from the spa to other famous places in Murcia such as Caravaca de la Cruz or Jumilla, famous for its wine and where clients get a tour of a wine cellars that has a curious “room of scents”. And if you want to relax in a somewhere more central in Archena, the town also has a 4-star hotel right in the centre with spa services, a solarium and padel.

Thermal spa therapy all over Murcia

Besides Archena, the whole region is known to be perfect for finding the tranquillity that we all desire. In fact, Archena is only 60 kilometres from the Mar Menor and La Manga, famous for their muds with curative properties. So, if you have several days and you feel like discovering some more places while continuing with your plan to disconnect, there's lots of choice. You'll find other hot spring spas in Fortuna and Cartagena. Do you prefer hydrotherapy spas? They are to be found in Águilas, Cartagena, Lorca, Los Alcázares, San Javier and Torre Pacheco. And if thalassotherapy centres are your thing (treatments using sea water), you should go to San Pedro del Pinatar.

Practical tips

The Archena hot-spring spa provides customer service and guided tours in English, French, German and Russian. It's best to do a 15-day treatment although, if you like, you can go for just one day (without accommodation).
