We invite you to come and discover the Basque Country's gastronomy, one of the most prestigious in the world. You'll be able to taste the famous pintxos, attend workshops with renowned chefs, prepare typical dishes and discover the atmosphere of the markets for yourself.
A day of txikiteo
Txikiteo means spending time with friends while drinking small glasses of txakoli (typical Basque wine) and trying tasty pintxos in different bars. We suggest you come and enjoy it in the three main cities in the region: San Sebastián, Bilbao and Vitoria. In San Sebastián a guide will also tell you interesting facts about the city. Bilbao and Victoria have prepared a route that enables you to discover both cities while enjoying a day of txikiteo.
Learning about traditional Basque cuisine
Do you know where the flavours of Basque cuisine come from? Far away from the stove, in the markets. We suggest you come and discover, for example, the oldest market in the province of Guipúzcoa: the market of Ordizia. The best time to visit is in the mornings, so you can come and select the best products from the stalls, and then be part of a gastronomy association (which focuses on regional food and the pleasure of preparing it and tasting it in company) and make typical dishes alongside their chefs.
Another of the best known markets is on Mondays in Gernika, in the province of Vizcaya. You can visit it with a guide who will invite you to do your shopping practising Basque (the language spoken in the Basque Country), if you want. Then it will be time to enjoy the town's pintxos route.
If you want to discover one of the most traditional dishes in Basque cuisine, you'll have to visit Balmaseda (Vizcaya). As well as enjoying txikiteo, you'll be able to help local chefs prepare the typical putxera: a delicious stew that originated in the 19th century with the railroad workers, who used to use the steam from the trains to heat up their food.
Enjoy three stars
San Sebastián has numerous internationally acclaimed restaurants. Make the most of your visit by getting to know the menus, but especially, by discovering the food at restaurants with Michelin stars, and enjoying a live demonstration of the most creative Basque cuisine techniques in restaurants such as Akelarre, Mugaritz and Ni Neu.
You are the chef
Cookery lessons with a prestigious chef, or gastronomy workshops to prepare pintxos are some of the other attractions you'll find in the Basque Country. Furthermore, some of them take place in prestigious restaurants or emblematic buildings such as the Kursaal Conference Centre and Auditorium in San Sebastián. The best thing is that when you finish you'll be able to taste your own creations and then you can recreate them at home. ¡On egin! (Enjoy!)
