Tidal area of Zumaia. Gipuzkoa

Gipuzkoa (Province)

Basque Country

It is located in the Basque Country, in northern Spain. All along the length of its coastline, part of what is known as the Basque Coast, there are spectacular beaches on the shores of the Cantabrian Sea, and the unusual geological formations of the cliffs of Deba and Zumaia.

One of the best-known images of this area is the view of the bay of La Concha in the capital, Donostia-San Sebastián. This city is a perfect combination of noble houses and modern architecture; as seen in buildings such as the Palacio Kursaal conference centre, where the famous San Sebastián International Film Festival is held. Also worth visiting along the coast are seaside towns such as Zarautz, Getaria, Mutriku and Hondarribia, which offer a range of cultural attractions.

In the interior of Guipúzcoa you'll find landscapes of valleys and mountains, as well as natural areas such as the Aiako Harria and Aralar nature reserves. There are also examples of Romanesque and Baroque architecture: the shrine of La Antigua in Zumarraga and the Loiola basilica in Azpeitia are just a couple of examples. The shrine of Arantzazu is also particularly interesting for its avant-garde style. The area is well-known for its gastronomy and is home to several world-class restaurants. It is also famed for its food, particularly the "pintxos", delicious miniature morsels of  "haute cuisine".
