Description

The Path of El Somontano cross a wide range of lands.

Lands from the spurs of the Outer Spurs of the Pyrenees in the north to the flatlands of unirrigated land in the south, now partially reconverted into irrigation land through the reservoir of El Grado and El Canal del Cinca, passing the fertile plan of the river Vero (the real unifying force of the region).
The eastern and western borders are within the rivers Cinca and Alcanadre, with incursions of the Somontano onto the opposite banks. These paths are made up of an extensive and varied range of tracks, with a total of 267 km. As well as the GR 45, this network is made up of other such as the Wine Route (PR-HU 71), a looped path that leaves from the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora del Pueyo, the Herding Route (PR-HU 72), the GR 17, Maria Path, which climbs to the Sanctuary of Torreciudad and, lastly, a stretch of the GR 1, the Historic Path.
The capital of the Somontano is the city of Barbastro. The natural environment is privileged and its orography, carved out by the water over time, runs from the last escarpments of the Pyrenees, with their crests and ravines, through fertile plans to reach the pre-desert plains. Here the reliefs decorate the landscape, without disturbing man and his work.Water, without being abundant, is sufficient and the climate, halfway between snow and the dryness of the steppes, is pleasant. While there is still snow in northern lands, the trees are covered with blossom in the villages of the Somontano.
