Description

Historic region of Aragón, documented prior to the 10thcentury.

El Sobrarbe is the country of the canyons and the gorges (Añisclo, Ordesa, Escuaín) and of the sober massifs of Monte Perdido (3,354 m.), Posets/Llardana (3,375 m.), Comachibosa (3,303 m.) and Cotiella (2,912 m.). The origins of what was once a County and a Kingdom remain shut away in its castles, monasteries, churches, chapels and villages.
The GR 19 begins at the foot of the Posets/Llardana, in the meadows of Biadós. Following the course of the Cinqueta, it drops through the Bal de Chistau to cross the River Cinca. Along this valley, among leafy forests and under the extensive sides of La Peña Montañesa (2,291 m.), you cross to l'Aínsa, with its beautiful old village.Hugging the Sierra de Gerbe, the path continues to La Fueva and, joining the GR1 for its last stretch, covers the spectacular defile of El Entremón, ending in Mesón de Ligüerre, (holiday centre).
The GR 19.1 variant splits off from the main path in Sin (la Bal de Chistau), rising up the El Collado de la Cruz del Guardia to reach Bielsa along the wild Barranco de Montillo ravine. From here, an ancient path connects the Valley of Pineta-Bielsa with the valley of El Yaga, crossing El Portillo de Tella to connect with the GR 19 near to Tella.
As well as the GR 19, the El Sobrarbe path network includes the 10 PR and a stretch of the GR 15. In total, there are 250 km. of signposted paths.
