This passes through extensive, open areas of countryside, beginning and ending on the Mediterranean coast. It traces a belt around Barcelona at a radius of around 50 km., crossing five natural parks.

The GR 5 starts in Sitges and enters the Natural Park of El Garraf, a land of karstic nature and very peculiar vegetation, alternating hills with abysses. It then drops down towards the vineyards of El Penedès, with its sparkling wine industries. It later climbs to Montserrat through Collbató, joining the GR 172 to reach the sanctuary of the Patron Saint of Catalonia, in the Natural Park of Montserrat. From here, the route heads for La Serra del l'Obac, the Natural park of Sant Llorenç de Munt and passes through Sant Llorenç Savall and Sant Miquel del Fai, with its spectacular waterfalls. It drops down to Aiguafreda and climbs to El Tagamanent, before entering the Natural Park of El Montseny. After passing this massif, the path drops down to Sant Celoni before climbing back up, crossing the Coastal mountain range through the Natural Park of Montnegre before finally reaching Canet de Mar, an obviously coastal town.
