La Luz castle – Fundación de Arte y Pensamiento Martín Chirino
Calle Juan Rejón, s/n.
35007 Palmas de Gran Canaria, Las, Gran Canaria (Canary Islands)
This is the location of the foundation dedicated to the Canary Islands sculptor Martín Chirino, and contains 25 of his works.
It was built as the result of the fight against piracy, and is considered the oldest fortress on the island. It was originally built on the shores of the sea, however due to the fact that the land has been artificially reclaimed, it now stands a little inland. It is located in the north of the island beside the port, and was used as a defence during the 16th century to protect the city against attack by English and Dutch pirates. This was the reason for its former name of the fortress of La Luz.
