Exhibition: Chagall. The Breakthrough Years, 1911-1919
The Guggenheim Bilbao Museum shows a selection of works by Marc Chagall produced during the period when he was evolving most as an artist and person: from 1911 to 1919.
These were years marked by contrasts for the artist, coinciding with huge political upheavals. In 1911, Chagall moved to France from Belarus, and worked in Paris for three years. His works from that period show influences both of Russian folk art and the avant-garde of Picasso, Delaunay and Lipchitz. On his return, he experienced a process of self-discovery, producing numerous self-portraits and depictions of Jewish life.
