The Venetian Renaissance
Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid
Palma Vecchio. Portrait of a young woman known as ‘La Bella’, c. 1518-1520. Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Madrid
16th-century Venetian painting will be the main focus next summer at the Thyssen Museum in Madrid.
Masterpieces from artists such as Tintoretto, Veronese, Titian and Lotto will be borrowed from important collections and galleries all over the world to be put on display in the Madrid museum. The main objective of the exhibition is to show the evolution of Venetian painting, from the importance of colour, with subject-matter dominated by the image of power and beauty, to the destructured brushstrokes towards the end of the period. The subjects on show will include a series of portraits and pastoral scenes, mainly with mythological and religious themes.
