Exhibition: Agon! Competition in Ancient Greece
The Trustees of the British Museum (2016)
One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Marble slab representing Greeks fighting Amazons, c. 350 BCE. Marble from the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, in present-day Bodrum (Turkey)
Athlete or hero, c. 320-300 BCE. Roman marble version of a Greek original. Probably from Italy
Obra Social 'La Caixa' presents the competitive spirit of human nature in this exhibition of pieces from the British Museum, some of which are leaving London for the first time.
The show includes a wide range of Greek objects, including sculptures, armour, jewellery, coins and pottery. As well as sporting rivalry, they also represent intellectual and artistic competition, and spheres such as politics, theatre and war. The exhibition shows how rivalry emerged among all the social classes, from the lowest to the highest.
