Matadero Madrid

Matadero Madrid

Madrid

After its restoration, the old slaughterhouse and livestock market of Madrid was transformed into a large multidisciplinary space, dedicated to artistic experimentation and production.

The Matadero Madrid Contemporary Creation Centre is found in one of the industrial pavilions built between 1908 and 1928, designed by Luis Bellido for the Madrid livestock market of the era. These buildings form one of the most interesting architectural complexes in the city. Currently, this piece of industrial heritage has been recovered and transformed into a centre for cultural dissemination, research and creation, with different activities that promote citizen participation. Each pavilion has its own programmes and services related to a specific cultural area: for example, stage arts in the Naves del Español; design at Design Central; visual arts in the Cineteca or literature in the Casa del Lector. It also has a 4,000 m2 exhibition centre (Nave 16) and a large outdoor space (Matadero Street and Plaza), where concerts and shows of all kinds are held.
