Going out for tapas in Salamanca is a way of not only sampling the local dishes and gastronomic products, but also of taking part in a custom which is well-loved by its inhabitants. It’s something everyone enjoys: good food in a great atmosphere. The historic centre of the city is a traditional area for tapas. The bars and watering holes in the Plaza Mayor are packed with people at lunch and dinner time. Venues such as the Cervantes, Novelty, Bambú and Don Mauro are particularly popular and have a special charm. There are numerous pavement cafés and pleasant bars and restaurants along the Rúa or in the Plaza de Anaya square.

Of course the shared portions and canapés of different cured sausages and meats (cured pork loin, chorizo, pork fillet, boiled ham, bacon…) are constantly being passed around the counters and bars. Everyone around you and the waiters themselves will be happy to tell you all about each bar’s specialities.
