Granada

Located to northwest of the province of Granada, Montefrío has one of the most spectacular landscapes of the region of Loja. Its architecture blends with the contrast between its abrupt vegetation and the extensive fields of cereals and olive trees.

An imposing monument ensemble is at the top of the rock that presides over the town. It is made up of the remains of a Nasrid Arab fortress and the Church of the Villa, in Gothic Renaissance style. The Visitor Centre of the Last Frontier of Al-Andalus can be found inside, an interactive museum and the perfect place for learning about the region's medieval past.Another notable temple is the Church of the Encarnación, in neoclassical style. If you walk towards the Plaza de España you will find more buildings of interest, such as the San Juan de los Reyes Hospital, the Church of San Sebastián and the Casa de los Oficios, which houses the Tourist Information Office of Montefrío.From the square of San Antonio church you can enjoy a panoramic view of the town, but not the only one. If you want to enjoy Montefrío from various points of view, do not hesitate to visit viewpoints, such as Arrabal, Las Peñas-Francisco Adamuz, the panoramic viewpoint on Illora road or the one built on the outskirts of town to express gratitude for the recognition received by the popular travel magazine National Geographic. The Peña de los Gitanos archaeological complex is only five kilometres away, in the prehistoric town of Los Castillejos, the perfect spot for hiking, bike rides or horseback riding. You can learn about the importance of the olive grove and its cultivation in the province of Granada at the Olive Museum. One of the most unique festivals in Montefrío is “The Night of Lights”, an ancestral celebration that commemorates the end of the olive harvest on 1 February every year. Montefrío's gastronomy is marked by its exquisite extra virgin olive oil and its handmade cheeses. Among the traditional recipes, dishes such as garlic roasted kid, asparagus and collard omelettes or remojón, a typical salad of tomatoes and roasted peppers, orange, onion, eggs and tuna, stand out.
