Guadalest, sitting on a rock at more than 500 m above sea level, overlooks the reservoir that supplies water to the La Marina Baixa region.
Guadalest is located in the corridor between the Aitana and Xortá mountain ranges. Of Muslim origin, it preserves an old town with historic and artistic buildings. It is worth going up to the San José castle, a Muslim fortress from the 11th century that is accessed by a natural tunnel in the rock. You can see some amazing views from there. Only one tower remains from the 11th century La Alcozaina castle.
