The Santa María collegiate church is situated in Vigo's old town and is the city's most popular church. It is dedicated to the Cristo de la Victoria (Christ of victory). It dates back originally to the Middle Ages, although it was demolished and rebuilt in the 19th century, and this is the construction visible today. The cornerstone was set in 1816, and the works were not completed until 1836. The church has three barrel vaulted naves. The outside naves are narrow while the central one is very wide. The naves are separated by twelve Doric columns.
