Visit to the vineyards of Bodega Ecológica in Tenerife
High altitude organic wines. High altitude wines are those whose production and growth takes place at more than 800 m above sea level. They are characterised by the superior quality of the grapes that are only acquired at these altitudes because the winters are longer and the temperature difference is very pronounced between night and day, creating greater freshness in the grapes and thus a slower ripening that allows for more aroma and flavour. This is the example of Bodegas Ferrera, a small family business that has endured in the 7 Lomas protected natural area, feeding off the volcanic minerals from the eruption of the Arenas Negras volcano and the meteorological conditions provided by being more than 1,000 metres above sea level. No less important is its recognition as a 100% organic winery, creating a perfect ecosystem between the vineyard, the sheep and the plants . This has led to countless awards such as the Gold Medal at the Baco Cosecha Awards in 2022.Visit to the vineyard. During our visit we will learn about the rigorous work carried out by this family for more than 2 generations to produce the most outstanding organic wines of the archipelago. We will take a tour of the estate, through which we will learn about different types of grapes, their cultivation methods, their origin, and we will also have the opportunity to make several stops to taste these grapes along with a tapa of local products. During the tour we will also understand the development cycle that grapes follow in an ecological way and the role played by each of the factors that make this growth possible. We also highlight the cultivation of free-standing grapes , which indicates that they have varieties that predate diseases such as phylloxera. This disease affected most of the European crops while the Canary Islands, thanks to their isolation in the middle of the Atlantic, were able to keep out of it, which is why nowadays we find direct cultivation vines.
