How to get there

Barcelona airport

Barcelona enjoys a strategic location in southern Europe, and has excellent infrastructures for air, sea and land transport which guarantee rapid access to the city from any Spanish or international destination.

With over 34 million travellers a year, the El Prat Airport is the second most important in Spain in volume of passengers, and traffic is expected to increase with the new terminal which opened in 2009. Its facilities are located in the municipal district of El Prat de Llobregat, 12 kilometres to the southwest of the Catalan capital. Barcelona's airport offers daily flights to and from the main Spanish destinations, particularly the Madrid-Barcelona air shuttle service, which has flights every 30-60 minutes between the two cities. Paris, Bordeaux, Munich, London, Milan and Rome are just some of the international destinations available from Barcelona.

You can reach the city from the airport by taxi, bus or train. The Aerobús is the express bus route to Plaça de Catalunya square: it runs from 5:30 am to 00:30 am with a frequency of between 5 and 10 minutes, and a one-way ticket costs €5.30. Alternatively, the urban line L-46 runs to Plaza de España square, and each journey costs €2. The train goes to the Barcelona Sants station and Paseo de Gracia, among others, and runs every day from 5:45 am to 11:45 pm, approximately. In addition, there is a night bus (no. N17) to Plaça de Catalunya square, which runs about every 20 minutes between 11 pm and 5 am. Barcelona is also an important rail hub, and is a point of interchange between the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of Europe. The Estació de França station, located at the end of Barcelona Port has Elipsos Trenhotel rail services to Paris, Zurich and Milan. Other stations for long-distance services are Passeig de Gràcia and Sants, close to Plaça de Espanya. Euromed trains are outstanding for their speed and quality service, running between Barcelona-Sants and Valencia in less than three hours. Also worthy of special mention are the AVE high-speed services between Barcelona and Tarragona, Lleida, Zaragoza Madrid, Cordoba, Malaga and Seville.

By road, the A-7 motorway links the Mediterranean motorway with France and provides access to the tourist destinations on the Costa Brava and other regions in the province of Girona.

The A-2 motorway goes to Zaragoza and connects with Madrid and Bilbao. The Estación del Nord is the main station for scheduled bus services to Spanish and international destinations. Other companies use Sants station.

Barcelona Port is one of the busiest on the Mediterranean and offers scheduled ferry services to and from Majorca, Ibiza, Minorca and Italy, with the option of travelling with your car. It is also a departure and stopping point for many pleasure cruises.
