Here's what we suggest: relaxing on board one of the finest tourist trains in the world. Sounds good, doesn't it? And wouldn't it be great to travel for eight days and seven nights through the mountains, valleys, cliffs and beaches of Green Spain? This is the route of the Transcantábrico, a real 'cruise on rails'.
From Santiago de Compostela (Galicia) to León (Castile-León), or to San Sebastián (in the Basque Country), or vice versa... through the most beautiful landscapes in Green Spain in the north of the country. This is the route plied by the Transcantábrico during eight days and seven nights, and which is definitely to be recommended. Why? You'll wind through green valleys and mountains, practically skimming the waves of the Cantabrian Sea. And because the Transcantábrico is a narrow-gauge train, it can travel through some of the most beautiful natural areas. Castile-León, the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia await you. And if you want, you can choose the number of days on board in each pre-arranged route.
Leave your watch at home and prepare to enjoy the views from the train windows and stop off at unique destinations. Would you like to know just a few? León and its cathedral, the 'Peine de los Vientos' sculpture in San Sebastián, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the coastal city of Santander, the Altamira Caves in Santillana del Mar, the Picos de Europa National Park in Asturias, the pre-Romanesque monuments in Oviedo and the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Many of these places have the UNESCO World Heritage designation. However, the list of places to visit is much longer and the best way to discover them is by taking a trip on the Transcantábrico. And for your convenience you'll also have a multilingual guide along the whole route, as well as a bus to take you to each place and back to the train.
Carriages fitted with every possible comfort
As well as the organised visits, one of the most enjoyable aspects of the trip is the train itself, with a range of amenities specially designed for your comfort. Imagine a team of professionals at your service, international daily newspapers, large suites with an ensuite bathroom, hydrosauna, turbo massage and steam bath... And if you feel like some entertainment, don't miss the elegant lounge carriages with a bar and a dance floor, or more peaceful spaces where you can take in a film or play board games with your companion. And best of all: large windows so you don't miss any of the spectacular views.
The Transcantábrico is an invitation to enjoy nature, culture, and of course, good food. During your journey you'll be treated to a delicious buffet breakfast in the lounge car. But the best part comes later: the Transcantábrico invites you to enjoy lunch and dinner in some of the finest restaurants in the regions you pass through. Genuine gourmet destinations where you'll be able to sample the most delicious and typical dishes of northern Spain, always accompanied by choice wines.
Although the normal train season is from March to October, if you wish to travel any other time of the year the Transcantábrico can design a tailor-made trip if you request it in advance.
Now's the moment to treat yourself to a trip on board this luxury train. You'll share landscapes, flavours, monuments and sensations that you'll remember for ever. Surrender to all the charms of this train and discover places you've always dreamt of visiting. Because when you see all the natural attractions of Green Spain right outside your window, you'll see why travelling on the Transcantábrico is such a pleasure.
