Beech forests in the autumn
Come to Spain in the autumn, the perfect season for enjoying the beauty and magic of our forests. At this time of year the trees change into shades of ochre, orange, red and gold, myriad hues that give our mountains a unique appearance.
In Spain, the second most mountainous country in Europe, the beech forests await you. These shady, leafy and moist woods can mainly be found in the north of Spain. The list is endless, although the most spectacular include the forests located in the Picos de Europa National Park and the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park; the Pedrosa beech forest in Segovia; the Montejo forest, one of the southernmost in Europe, situated in the Sierra del Rincón Mountains near Madrid, which has UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status; the Tejera Negra Nature Reserve in Guadalajara; the Señorío de Bértiz Nature Reserve in Navarre; and the beech forests in the volcanic area of La Garrotxa in Girona.
Come and discover these natural spaces, these oceans of leaves with their trees of amazing forms and contrasts. Stunningly beautiful forests in which the copper-toned beeches often intermingle with oaks, chestnut trees and birches, and a cloak of mist is never very far away.
As always, visit the local tourist offices for recommendations on the best itineraries and excursions.
