Hispania glass in Castile-La Mancha

Glass was supplied to the Roman Empire from this mine.

This ancient Roman mine is situated on a small hill known as "La Mora Encantada". There are several legends about this place, the existence of a treasure and the enchantments of a Moorish princess. The mine was exploited by the Romans to extract the famous lapis specularis, or Hispania glass, transparent gypsum that was used as glass for windows. It is more than 1,000 metres long and there are three exploitation levels. Visitors can enter a cave that is more than 2,000 years old, with rooms and galleries that show the traces of mining tools next to a crystalline geological universe on the walls and ceilings.
