George Herriman, "Krazy Kat" (1938). From the collection of Patrick McDonnell and Karen O'Connell
Examining comics as a mass medium and artistic influence. This is the main goal of an exhibition of works by the American cartoonist George Herriman.
Considered one of the most important creators in American comics, Herriman (USA, 1880-1944) was the author of popular strips like “Krazy Kat”, “Baron Bean”, “Embarrassing Moments”, and “The Family Upstairs”, marking the start of this form of artistic expression - the “funny pages” - in the newspapers of the time. Through 120 pieces, including original drawings and the newspapers where they were first published, the show challenges the idea of a “lesser” art form or children’s genre, which comics are often seen as.
