In the reign of Charles III, the El Pardo Palace was remodelled by Sabatini. Villanueva was commissioned to design a small house for the then-Prince Charles, who would take the throne as Charles IV. This small building would be similar to the ones erected in El Escorial for the prince and his brother the infante, and to the one in the Príncipe Garden in Aranjuez. All reflected the style imported from France of adding small, luxuriously decorated buildings, surrounded by gardens, which housed art collections and which were used by the young princes for recreation, but not as a dwelling. The general layout of the garden still exists, and some box hedges have been replaced. Visitors will find much to admire in these well-maintained gardens.
