The Routes of Don Quixote
We propose a journey around the Castile-La Mancha Region on the most extensive ecological and cultural sightseeing route in Europe.
To commemorate the 4th centenary of the publication of the first edition of the Famous Gentleman Don Quixote of la Mancha, the Castile-La Mancha region has created the most extensive ecological and cultural sightseeing route in Europe: The Route of Don Quixote. It covers 2,500 kilometres and includes 144 towns. Discover all the places the knight errant and his loyal squire Sancho Panza travelled through on their quest for glorious deeds, four centuries ago.
Travelling along this vast green corridor on foot, by bike or even on horseback is one of the best ways to discover the land portrayed by Miguel de Cervantes in his immortal novel. The route, which is perfectly signposted, will lead you along paths, cattle routes and historic roads through the provinces of Toledo, Ciudad Real, Albacete, Cuenca and Guadalajara.
The itinerary is divided into 10 sections, making up a series of 60 day-long outings. From the city of Toledo to Sigüenza and Atienza in the north of the region you can explore the natural areas around the Lagunas de Ruidera and the Tablas de Daimiel lakes; you can visit a host of incomparable historical sites, including Toledo and Almagro; you can see ravines and canyons such as the Río Dulce gorge; you can enjoy a delicious and varied cuisine with its cheeses and wines.
This route is an open invitation to adventure. A trip though a land where a first-rate historic, artistic and natural heritage awaits you. On your way you will come across windmills, old town squares, castles, ancient walls, inns, churches, palaces, cathedrals, convents, forests, lakes, mountains, rivers, wine cellars… Without a doubt, this is the way to discover the Castile-La Mancha region in this 4th centenary of the birth of Don Quixote.
