The church was built during the second half of the 12th century. Its construction coincides with the moment when the Pilgrim's Road to Santiago de Compostela peaked. The majority of the hypothesis about the origin of the church is based on the idea of its function as a cemetery, a service for those pilgrims that died on the way to Santiago. The building belonged to the Protogothic school, it has an octagonal floor, and is surrounded by a cloister and finished off with a pentagonal apse, semicircular inside. The roof is made out of a base of stone slabs. The exterior is noteworthy for its pentagonal apse and two entrance doors, both decorated with plant and animal reliefs.
